Smoking damaged painting restored

This painting came to us very grimy and embedded with dirt, and smoke damage. The owner told us that this painting hung in a bar for many years back when smoking was allowed. It looked like someone painted a caramel color all over it. Here is a fun time lapse video of about eight hours of cleaning time, all into less than a minute. http://strazzagallery.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/PaintingRestoration.mp4.mp4   Finished restoration below: The painting came out really well, and looked like the artists original intentions were brought back to life, and the owner of this painting was...

Baby chicks painting restored

This adorable old oil painting of baby chicks came to us in pretty bad condition. The canvas was extremely fragile. It had a pretty good size tear, and the surface was embedded with dirt. Beyond that it was probably in a room with a fire place or smoking, or both, which made for more damage. This painting absolutely need a re-lining because it was too fragile; it would not handle being stretched for framing. Re-lining is when we support the painting with a new canvas from the back. The cleaning, while delicate, went very well, and the re-lining gave extra support to strengthen the painting....

Saying Grace painting restored

This lovely little painting came to us, and it was entitled, “Saying grace.” It is a tiny painting about 5×7 inches. It depicts an older man sitting to a meal and simply saying grace. It is an old oil painting and it had some problems as you can see from the before picture. There was some chipping, and also a moldy film all over it. It needed a deep cleaning and in-painting. It was delicate, but it came out great. Lisa antiqued a new frame to give an age appropriate look; it is shown restored on the after photo below.    ...

Historic Ship painting Restored

This was an antique nautical painting that came to us with some patches on the back due to holes in the canvas. The paint was starting to crack, and it was quite dirty and in need of a total restoration, cleaning, and re-lining. Here are some before and after photos. We also replaced the old frame that came with the painting with a lovely gold frame that seemed more appropriate for the age and subject matter of this painting.   Painting framed, as we received it, before restoration.   Back of painting showing damage, and a couple of patches, before restoration.   Closeup of...

Cleaning an Old Painting

Cleaning an Old Painting

This is from an on site restoration. I was hired by a company that specializes in church restoration to clean and repair these old paintings in a church in NYC. It was of course a huge on-taking. And, while you may not have paintings this big in your home (these are 6 x 18 feet) these do show what cleaning reveals with an older painting. Cleaning after a fire, flood, even after years of smoking is important to preserve your painting. Take a look at the results below; these show an amazing difference, and it was even finished yet.  ...

Seascape oil painting restored

This painting came to us from avid collector in NYC. It’s a lovely painting, about 100 years old, that had an unknown history. This particular painting was very dirty, and probably spent a lot of time, years, over a fire place; but one never really knows. As you can see from our testing (first photo), that this painting really cleaned up nicely. We did a thorough cleaning, some in-painting where needed, and a final varnish. The result was significant, and a happy one for our good customer. If you have a painting or photograph that needs restoration in any way, contact us: Strazza Art...

4 x 8 Foot Architectural Design Restored

This is the architectural rendering designed for the Met Life Insurance housing project, in Parkchester South, Bronx, NY. It was painted on a 4×8 foot plywood panel. It was discovered in a basement and incredibly dirty. It was very faded, and when we started testing it we found out that it was a drawing with fine lines and watercolor paint, not oil paint as the client originally thought. This was quite a challenge because it would be very easy to loose the color, and lines when cleaning. We did however find a way to gently restore the color, but only with grueling patience i.e. q-tips...

Giving Thanks painting revived

This lovely little painting of a man giving thanks for his food, came to us in need of cleaning and a bit of in-painting. It had a film of some kind over it, and it really needed some careful attention. The results of this restoration left it with more contrast, detail, and the subtle colors were brought back to life. It ended up being a lovely painting, that framed well and looks great. Here are the before and after photos.  ...

Damaged Landscape Oil Painting Repaired

This painting came to us in pretty bad shape. It was chipping and peeling, and was very dirty from nicotine smoke damage. It was also very brittle. This one required a new backing of canvas to support the painting. This is called a re-lining. Here are some photos of the process. Small Horse and Carriage Painting Restored

This very small 4 x 6 inch painting came to us in need of serious attention. As you can see it was peeling, chipped, and it also needed to be cleaned from smoke damage. One of the challenges here was that it was painted on a board, and we could not do any repair from the back side of the painting. The final result was lovely and the customer was very happy. Here are the before and after photos of this...

Beautiful old Russian painting restored

This nice painting from Russia was brought to us for restoration. It was quite old and very delicate. It had yellowed over the years and was in need of some loving care. We were happy to see this one come alive and vibrant again, without loosing it’s sense of history, or what we often call “age appropriate” look. The customer was very happy! Here are some before and after photos of this restoration. Before restoration.   Beginning stages of cleaning.   After restoration....

Old Oil Portrait Restored

This painting came to us in pretty bad shape. It had at one time been rolled up and probably shipped in a non protective way. It was cracked, and folded in many places, which ruined the paint. The entire surface of this painting suffered one problem or another, all in all, quite a problem. We had a lot to do with this one, but it came out really nice, and the customer was pleasantly surprised and quite happy. We also re-stretched this one so it was more secure than before. Here are some before and after shots of this restoration. Before restoration and un-stretched.   Details of...

Paintings damaged during a move

Sometimes things happen that we don’t expect while moving the contents of a home into another home. This unfortunate painting was mistakenly dropped onto a chandelier that was on the floor. A million to one you might say, but we see things like this quite often. It happens to the best of us (even professional movers). So we’re here to fix things just like this. The damage was extensive, and the painting fairly old and brittle to begin with. Here are some before and after shots of the restoration, which in the end needed to be re-lined with a new canvas backing. If you have a...

What a little matting can do …

Sometimes a piece comes along that has some serious acid problems, and there’s not always a lot you can do (in a certain price range). But it can be de-acified, and the re-matted and framed. This is really helpful in stopping or slowing down the problem in many cases. It may seem obvious, but here are some photos, with and without mat, so you can see how nicely a print will clean up. We did treat this piece to stop, or at least very much slow down, the problem. It will look nice for years to come. These photos just show how nice a simple mat can be. Don’t give up on the pieces...

Oil Painting Portrait Restored

This oil painting came to us in serious need of restoration. It had huge flakes of paint falling off and many cracks as you can see form the photos. The painting was originally done on a board which makes it harder for us to repair as we would usually do some of the repair from the back of a canvas. We had to take each bit of flaked off paint that we had and secure it back onto the board. The rest we had to fill and in-paint. Here are some of the photos of this restoration along the way. The photos below show the restoration starting and at the end...

Beautiful Portrait Restored

This beautiful portrait came to us in need of cleaning and restoration. It was a subtle painting, and it had been restored before. The painting had a few problems, being somewhat flat looking, the elbow on the girl had a few problems, and there was a dust of some kind in the surface of the painting. We discovered many interesting things about the painting’s history as we worked on it, especially that the background color was completely changed from a darker brown to this lighter grey-blue. The cleaning and in-painting, plus new varnish, made for a lovely change in this painting; and...
